1. My Personal History of Learning, Social Computing

How do you learn best?
Actively engaging the topics—discussion and application
What was your worst schooling (in formal school) experience? What made it the worst?
Every time someone tries to stand up front and yammer—what made it worse was when no time was left for questions!
What (if at all) social computing technologies or CSCL tools are you familiar with (work(ed) with)?
Working closely with the Emerging Technology Group, I have “played with” and am “familiar with” a lot of social computing technology. In general, though, I am an applied researcher/assessment person, not a technician.
What are your technology skills regarding (circle your answer)

What sparked your interest in the topics of the class?
Social learning an media is all the rage in higher education and as we shift, as a discipline, I thought I needed a firmer grasp.
What are your expectations (Hopes) for this class?
A lot of dialogue and class participation as well as provocative facilitation by you!
What do you want to gain in this class
Conceptual-wise?
Social computing as applied to education (higher ed)
Technology-wise?
How the technologies can “puzzle piece” together
Application-wise…? (How to use the learned)
How, as a central IT unit, we can support diverse teaching/learning needs with social computing/Web 2.0 technologies while maintaining the integrity of operational credibility
What are your expectations for your career?
I hope to remain on the administrative side of things doing assessment at a system level.
Learning Contract
I will
1) Prepare 2 questions, based on assigned reading, every week
2) I will participate the discussion and allow each of my colleagues the chance to share their view, regardless of my beliefs
3) I will approach Johannes if I need help/guidance
4) I will do a book review on Here Comes Everyone (if approved)
5) I will write a fictional narrative on the role of social computing in education
6) I will develop a business plan for a Social network
I expect my colleagues to
1) Actively participate in the discussions
2) Adhere to an environment of mutual respect, even if we disagree
3) Contribute what s/he agrees to i.e. get the work done
I expect Johannes to
1) Be available outside of class time
2) Serve as a resource, as well, a “voice of reason”
3) Support and encourage all students to participate (a difficult task with so many students, I will admit)
